GRINDR PRIVACY POLICY

This Privacy Policy (โ€œPolicyโ€) explains how Grindr LLC, its parent companies, and subsidiaries (such as Grindr Canada Inc.) (collectively โ€œGrindrโ€) process your personal information. This policy applies to the websites, online services, and other Grindr properties that link to this Privacy Policy (the โ€œServicesโ€), including the Grindr mobile app, web app, website, and related services.

Our Commitment to Privacy. As a global social networking application primarily serving the GBTQ+ community, Grindr is committed to being transparent about how we collect and process your information, enabling you to control how your information is used, and protecting the privacy and security of the information we collect. We recommend you read this Policy and our Terms and Conditions of Service carefully. In addition to regular updates to this Policy, you may see occasional pop-up privacy notices on the Services providing further information on our practices.

Permissible Age. The Grindr properties are only for adults at least eighteen (18) years of age. If you are aware that a minor has submitted personal information on the Services, please contact us by either using the in-app reporting tool discussed <here> or submitting a request  here, so that we can take appropriate action.

PERSONAL INFORMATION WE COLLECT

When you use the Services, we collect personal information that you choose to provide directly to us or that we collect automatically, such as data about your interactions with and use of the Services. We may also receive information about you from third parties. 

 

Information you provide directly to us:

 

โ—      Account Information: When you set up an account, we require that you provide certain personal information such as email or phone number and date of birth to validate that you are an adult. In certain jurisdictions, we may require you to provide a video selfie or pair a video selfie with an official photo ID to confirm you are 18 years of age or older. This will involve processing your biometric information.

โ—      Profile Information. You choose what personal information you provide as part of your public profile. For example, you may share or not share health information like HIV and vaccination status, or sensitive data like racial or ethnic origin, or photos and videos. Your profile is public, so you should not include information that you want to keep private.

โ—      Messages. You also have a choice about what personal information you provide when you send a message to other users of the Services (which could include content such as photos, location, audio, video, emojis, gifs, reactions, etc.). If you send messages, you will be providing the user who views your message (and Grindr) with your personal information.

โ—      Photos, Videos, and Audio. Consistent with your permissions and if you enable video or photo features, we may collect audio, visual, or similar information.

โ—      Customer Support and Feedback. You may provide personal information to us for feedback and customer support services or when you agree to participate in surveys.

โ—      Location Information. Consistent with your permissions, we may collect your location information, including your precise geolocation, for purposes like determining your distance from other users (โ€œDistance Informationโ€) and displaying your location on our maps features.  If you choose to display your Distance Information in your profile, it could be used by some users to determine your exact location and to determine your identity. You can choose to hide your Distance Information, but the Services will continue to sort and display your profile based on your relative distance from other users. You may disable location services at any time on your device through your device settings or on your browser through your browser settings.

โ—      Purchase & Subscription Information. We may collect personal information about your purchases and subscriptions you make through the Services, including financial account and payment details, billing address, subscription tier, and renewal date.

 

Information we collect automatically.We collect internet, electronic activity, and other information automatically from the devices and browsers that you use, such as user activity and how you interact with the Services, as well as hardware and software information like your device model, device IDs, browser type, advertising identifiers, and IP address. Some of this information is collected through cookies (as defined below). For more information on how we use cookies, please see the <Cookies and Other Technologies> section below. We and our partners also scan, analyze, and collect information from the videos, images, audio, messages, and other content and metadata that you upload, such as content characteristics and attributes, used for purposes of recommendations, to provide the Services, and other operations that do not identify you but may be associated with your profile consistent with your choices. We may also make inferences about you from the information we collect, such as inferences based on your activity and usage within the app.

 

 

Information we receive from other sources. Grindr collects some personal information from other sources, such as through payment processors (where we receive Purchase Information and Account Information), other users of our Services (where the information we receive depends on the nature of their request to us) and, authentication partners like Apple, Google and Meta (such as if you link your Instagram account to your Grindr profile) where we receive an authentication token.

 

Note that some of the information you may choose to provide us (e.g., profile fields such as ethnicity, looking for and position) may be considered โ€œsensitiveโ€, โ€œspecial categoryโ€ under applicable privacy laws. We use this information to provide the Services as described in this Policy.  For information on how to exercise rights that may relate to your sensitive information please see the Your Choices and Rights  section below.

WHAT WE DO WITH YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We process your personal information for specific processing purposes and, where required by law, under applicable legal bases.We use your personal information to provide and support features of the Services and support platform safety, including to:

 

โ—      Provide the Services with artificial intelligence-driven features (โ€œgAIโ„ขโ€) and improve and develop such features, including by using your sensitive personal information, for personalization, recommendations, and other enhancements, and to support platform and user safety. โ—      Answer your inquiries and provide you with support.

โ—      Administer the Services, including troubleshooting, data analytics, and research.

โ—      Protect our interests as a company and enforce our Terms and Conditions of Service  and Community Guidelines.

โ—      Communicate with you, such as to notify you about changes to the Services.

โ—      Improve our marketing and advertising efforts, such as through third-party  cookies for the purposes of serving ads to free users of the Services.

โ—      Conduct surveys or obtain your voluntary feedback about the Services.

โ—      Comply with our legal obligations (as defined below).

โ—      For other purposes disclosed to you at the time we collect your information or pursuant to your consent, as permitted under applicable law.

We may anonymize or deidentify information so it is no longer considered personal information under applicable law. Where we deidentify information, we commit to maintain and use it in deidentified form and to not attempt to reidentify it. We may use non-personal information for any purpose permitted by law. This Policy does not apply to information that has been anonymized or, to the extent permitted by law, de-identified.

HOW WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

Depending on your use of the Services, we may share your personal information in the following ways:

 

โ—      The Grindr Community. As part of the Services, Grindr enables you to share your Profile Information, location, and other information with other Grindr users;

โ—      Service Providers and Third-Party Partners. Grindr may share your personal information with service providers and third-party partners to provide you the Services, such as with parties that act on our behalf for purposes of fraud prevention and customer support. We also may share your personal information with advertising and marketing partners to help facilitate advertising experiences, and with other partners that support the Services or with whom you provide personal information to directly (such as our payment processors).  

โ—      Business Transactions. If another company acquires, or plans to acquire, our company, business, or assets, that company may possess the personal information collected by us.

โ—      Legal Obligations. We may disclose personal information to investigate, prevent, or take action in connection with: (i) enforcement of the Grindr Terms and Conditions of Service; (ii) claims that any content or behavior violates our policies or the rights of third parties; (iii) requests for customer service; (iv) technical issues; (v) protecting the rights, property, or personal safety of Grindr, its users, or the public; (vi) legal requests including subpoenas, warrants, or court orders or in connection with any legal process; (vii) establishing or exercising our legal rights or defending against legal claims; (viii) tax and accounting purposes; or (ix) as otherwise required by law (collectively "legal obligations").

โ—      With your consent or at your direction.We may disclose your personal information to other third parties with your consent or at your direction, as permitted under applicable laws.

COOKIES AND OTHER TECHNOLOGIES

We and our third-party partners may use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies (collectively, โ€œcookiesโ€) on the Services for a number of purposes, including to conduct essential functions, collect statistical data, and integrate with third parties. We and our partners also use cookies for certain advertising purposes, including collecting information about your use of other sites and services to provide advertising (either on or off the Services) about products and services tailored to your interests.

 

There are several mechanisms through which you can control the use of cookies and related advertising purposes, including:

โ—      Grindr's Consent Management Platform. You may adjust the information-sharing controls anytime via the Consent Preference Center within the Services, such as by clicking on the Your Privacy Choices link in the footer of our website. For non-EEA/EU/UK users, this includes opting-out of behavioral advertising or other non-essential tracking technologies. For EEA/EU/UK users, other than cookies and similar technologies that are strictly necessary to operate the Services, we will only use these technologies with your consent.

โ—      Device identifier settings. You may also be able to reset device identifiers through settings on your mobile device. The procedure for managing device identifiers (e.g., IDFA and GAID) is different for each device. You can check the specific steps in the help or settings menu of your particular device.

โ—      Third-party opt-outs. You can opt-out from some third-party behavioral advertising at the Digital Advertising Alliance,Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada, or the European Digital Advertising Alliance.

โ—      Choices during account creation.When creating your Grindr account, you may also be presented with consent preference screens where you can control if your personal information can be used by advertising and marketing partners for purposes of serving you certain advertising on or off the Services. 

 

For users in the EEA/UK, Grindr participates in the IAB Europe Transparency & Consent Framework ("TCF") and complies with its specifications and policies. Grindr currently utilizes Ketch as our consent management platform ("CMP"). Ketch operates its CMP under the TCF with the CMP ID #340.

 

Please note that some of these mechanisms are specific to the particular browser or device or apply only when you are logged in to your account. You may need to opt out again if you delete your cookies or reset your device. 

HOW LONG WE KEEP YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We retain your personal information for no longer than is necessary to fulfill the purposes for which the information was collected or as otherwise permitted or pursuant to legal obligations, the Grindr Terms and Conditions of Service and Community Guidelines. Retention periods differ depending on criteria such as the sensitivity of the personal information, the duration of our relationship with you, or if retention is required for legal or security purposes. For example, Grindr generally retains data provided by users (such as account registration information, profile information, and message content) and data generated from users (such as activities of users on the Services) for as long as your account is active. We also retain a device identifier (i.e., IDFV and Android ID) and limited log information for a period of up to two years following account deletion to support internal reporting, metrics, and statistics.  If you decide to delete your Profile, it will no longer be visible to other Grindr users and your personal information will generally be deleted within 28 days. In limited circumstances, we may retain certain information for purposes including safety, security, fraud prevention, and compliance with our legal obligations. For example, Grindr may retain some account information, a device identifier (i.e., IDFV and Android ID), and limited log information associated with accounts or devices that have been banned or found to violate the Grindr Terms and Conditions of Service or Community Guidelines, and where relevant, may also retain chat messages used to report and assess the violative behavior that resulted in the ban. [LEARN MORE]

DATA TRANSFERS

Grindr is a U.S.-based company with no EEA/EU/UK/Swiss establishments at this time.  When you use the Services, your personal information will be processed by Grindr and its service providers in countries outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, including in the United States. The United States and other third countries may not afford the same privacy protections as your country of residence. We will take steps to ensure that transfers of personal information are in accordance with applicable law, carefully managed to protect your rights, and are either:

โ—      limited to recipients in countries that are recognized as providing an adequate level of protection by the European Commission or under UK or Swiss data protection laws (as applicable), including recipients in the U.S. that are certified to the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and UK or Swiss Extension; or

โ—      governed by agreements that incorporate standard contractual clauses approved for the transfer of personal information to recipients in third countries by the European Commission or under UK or Swiss data protection laws (as applicable)

YOUR CHOICES AND RIGHTS

Where your jurisdiction's law provides, you can make the following choices and request to exercise the following rights regarding your personal information held by Grindr.

โ—      Access & Portability. You may request that we provide you with confirmation that we process your personal information, a machine-readable copy of your personal information (including the categories of such personal information), and other information about our data processing practices (such as to whom we disclose personal information). โ—      Deletion. You may request that we delete the personal information we have collected from or about you. You may also delete your profile and related information by following the steps outlined here.

โ—      Correction. You may request that we correct your personal information. You may also use the โ€œEdit Profileโ€ section of the Services to review and change your Profile Information.

โ—      Restrict Processing. Under certain circumstances, you may request that we limit the way we process your personal information (e.g., through controls provided by your device's operating system).

โ—      Withdraw Consent. Where we process personal information based on your consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawing your consent will only apply to future processing activities and will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you withdrew your consent. For example, you may be able to withdraw your consent or opt out of certain uses of your โ€œsensitiveโ€ or โ€œspecial categoryโ€ data by going to your in-app Settings and then tapping Privacy Settings. Note that if you opt out, your data may continue to be processed where permitted under applicable law.

โ—      Object to Processing. You may object to us processing your personal information, including for relevant AI-related processing of personal information, here.

โ—      Automated decision making. Grindr does not use AI for decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects, like those related to employment, credit, or housing. Where we do use AI in other ways, you may have choices over certain AI-related processing in your app Privacy Settings.

โ—      Advertising. For information about how to opt-out or opt-in to the sharing of your personal information with our advertising and marketing partners for certain analytics and advertising purposes, please see <Cookies and Other Technologies> above.

โ—      Promotional Emails. You can opt out of receiving promotional emails, like newsletters, surveys, and offers, by following the unsubscribe instructions in emails you receive. If you unsubscribe from receiving such promotional emails, we may still send you service-related communications, and the Services may continue to deliver you in-app messages.

 

The easiest way to exercise your rights while protecting your privacy and security is by logging into your account to validate that you are the account holder, so we can verify your identity associated with your Grindr account. HOW WE PROTECT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

At Grindr, we work hard  to maintain the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the Services and to protect your personal information. We consistently strive to improve our defenses in the ongoing battle against threat actors. That said, no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is fully secure, and Grindr cannot guarantee the security of your personal information.

The latest version of the policy available at https://trust.grindr.com/en-US/privacy will govern our use of your personal information. Grindr may revise this policy from time to time. If Grindr determines, in its sole discretion, that the changes we make to this policy are material, we will notify you in advance (e.g., within the Services).

The table below describes all the purposes for which we collect, use, share, and otherwise process personal information of our users through the Services, the categories of personal information, the lawful basis under which we process personal information (where required by law), the source of the personal information, and the categories of recipients of personal information.

You also retain the right to escalate any unresolved concerns to the Information Commissioner's Office.

โ—      Please ensure your request is addressed to EDPO and not Grindr LLC. Please do not use this for general support inquiries. General support inquiries can be submitted here or via the support link within the App.

YOUR U.S. STATE PRIVACY RIGHTS

If you are a resident of the U.S., and depending on the state in which you reside, you may be entitled to other rights in addition to those described above, such as the right to:

-       Opt out of โ€œsale/sharingโ€ or processing for targeted advertising: You may have the right to opt out of the sale/sharing (as those terms are defined under applicable law) or processing of your personal information for purposes of serving you ads based on your activity across other services (โ€œtargeted advertisingโ€). You may exercise this right here, by clicking the โ€œDo Not Sell or Share My Personal Informationโ€ link in the footer of our site and choosing โ€œOpt-out / Do not sell or share my personal infoโ€ from the relevant drop-down menu, or by adjusting the sharing controls via the in-app Consent Preference Center (accessible from Settings within the App). Please note that each of these mechanisms apply only to the browser or device where you opt out, except where you are logged into your account. Depending on your jurisdiction, we also honor the Global Privacy Control ("GPC"), a universal opt-out preference signal that communicates your privacy preferences to the website you visit. Some of these choices apply only to the website and device you used to exercise the choice, so you may need to opt out on each browser and device you use to access the Services. Only adults may use Grindr, so Grindr does not sell, share, or process for targeted advertising purposes the personal information of consumers it knows are minors.

-       Appeals. You may be able to appeal a decision made regarding your privacy request by submitting a request here. In the event we deny your appeal, we will provide a written explanation of the decision, and instructions on how to contact your local Attorney General, or relevant  authority, for further review where permitted under certain U.S. state privacy laws.

-       No retaliation: You may have the right to not be retaliated against for exercising any of your rights.

-       Authorized agents. You may have the right to make a request through an authorized agent. If you are an authorized agent for an individual who resides in a state that allows requests through an authorized agent, please click here to submit a request and attach a written permission form signed by the individual that you represent, authorizing you to serve as the individual's agent.

 

To verify your identity, we may require you to confirm receipt of an email to the email address that matches our records, provide us with details relating to your history with us, or provide us with some additional information to authenticate your identity. If we cannot verify your identity, we may deny your request in accordance with applicable law. Your rights are subject to exceptions, and, to the extent permitted by law, requests must be exercised through the applicable designated method specified herein.

Additional California Disclosures

Do Not Track. Some web browser settings may allow you to automatically transmit a "Do Not Track" signal to online services you visit. Note, however, there is no consensus as to what "Do Not Track" means in this context. Like many online services, Grindr currently does not recognize automated browser signals regarding tracking mechanisms, which may include "Do Not Track" instructions.
